A Legacy Four Generations Strong

For the Dayton family, real estate isn’t simply a profession. It’s a legacy spanning four generations and more than a century.

It began in Lower Manhattan in the early 1900s, when John and Lillie’s grandfather and great-grandfather, Elmer Dean, founded W.E. Dean & Co., establishing the family’s roots in New York real estate.

In the 1950s, Pete Dayton joined his father-in-law, Elmer, beginning what would become a lifelong career in the industry. After W.E. Dean & Co. was acquired by Cushman & Wakefield in the 1960s, Pete and his family headed west to San Francisco, where Cushman & Wakefield had been selected as project manager and exclusive leasing agent for the landmark Bank of America Building at 555 California Street.

The next generation followed naturally. While attending college, Pete’s son John Dayton began working in commercial real estate in San Francisco. In 1990, he moved to Sonoma County, continuing the family tradition in real estate sales and property management before establishing his own independent firm in 2000.

Now, more than a century after Elmer Dean first opened his doors in Manhattan, a fourth generation is carrying that legacy forward. John’s daughter, Lillie Dayton, earned her real estate license in 2025 and, after graduating from Chapman University with a degree in Business Administration, will join the family business in 2026.
